Our Partner, Lucie Mills, has recently shared her thoughts on how tech leaders need to place greater emphasis on improving their environmental impact to support value creation in their businesses.
The article, published in Technology Dispatch, recognises the overwhelming nature of the climate emergency and implores tech leaders to put greater emphasis more than ever before on developing a sustainable mindset.
It’s often considered the case that tech businesses do not generate high emissions and, while this is often the case, sustainability still needs to be adapted across the sector. Whilst it’s true that technology companies themselves may not generate high emissions, the data centres used to support operations account for c.3.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) emissions – which exceed GHG emissions from the aviation industry (c.2.4%).
Not only is placing an onus on sustainability the right thing to do in order to rise to the environmental challenges facing the planet, but it’s a facilitator for company growth too. The sector has such a large sphere of influence in developing and implementing the technologies that will prove pivotal in progressing towards a more sustainable future. Which is why sustainable advocacy can positively affect a company’s bottom line and is imperative for long-term success and operational and commercial efficiency.
With recent reports discovering that 71% of C-suite leaders are feeling the pressure from investors to implement more sustainable plans, those who don’t risk being left behind. Collectively, tech companies can work to build a greener sector that’s fit for the future.
