Getting to know our Young Professionals

Last week we were delighted to host our Young Professionals Event at 20 Stories in Manchester. It was fantastic to see so many people from our community come together to connect, collaborate and network.

At NorthEdge we believe we can play a significant role in supporting more young people, from a diverse range of backgrounds, to consider a career in private equity. Whether it’s organising networking events, participating in the 10,000BlackInterns programme, or running our Private Equity Challenge with universities in our regions, we are proud to be able to give young talent exposure to our business and the opportunity to learn more about the private equity industry.

Having recently welcomed several new colleagues into the NorthEdge team, and in recognition of last week’s event, we are releasing a special podcast episode to hear from three young professionals within our business:

Simone Masterson

Taking a slightly different route to get into accounting and finance, Simone decided against going to university and instead used a school leaver programme. Simone got a job at a smaller accounting firm which involved a mix of audit and account prep, providing her with solid foundations for her accountancy career. She then moved onto BDO’s audit practice team, where she completed all her exams to become fully qualified. After almost three years at BDO, Simone developed an interest in M&A, which led her to joining EY within their transaction services team. She spent five years at EY, where she was able to travel around the world working on over 40 deals. Wanting to gain more exposure to the wider deal process, Simone decided to join NorthEdge in May 2022 as an Investment Manager.

Sam Allen

Whilst studying at Cambridge University, Sam secured an internship at EY in their restructuring team. Following graduation, he re-joined the same team and spent four years there, whilst also qualifying as an accountant in the process. During 2021 Sam joined the NorthEdge team as an Investment Executive.

Matthew Mellon

Being careers focused from a young age, Matthew always knew he wanted to pursue a career in corporate finance. After studying at Warwick University, he joined the graduate programme at investment bank J.P. Morgan. After gaining experience on several projects, Matthew decided that he wanted to have more involvement on the decision-making side of transactions, which led him to join AGC Equity Partners. Whilst gaining good exposure to different asset classes across Europe and the US, Matthew had a passion to work with UK backed businesses, particularly doing more with people. As a result, Matthew felt NorthEdge ticked plenty of his boxes and he joined in March 2022 as an Investment Manager.

In this episode the team explain what led them to a career in private equity, what has surprised them the most about working in the industry, and their top tips for people who want to follow a similar career path.
