NorthEdge announces winners of 2022 Private Equity Challenge

We are pleased to announce Ed Waller, Adam Townsend, Emily Day and Bekzat Bekmyrza, from the University of Sheffield, as the winners of our fourth annual Private Equity Challenge.

Partnering with Leeds University Union Trading & Investment Society, University of Sheffield Investment Society and Manchester University Trading & Investment Society, the challenge gives students the opportunity to learn more about the world of private equity and gain first-hand experience of the investment process.

Taking place over seven weeks, the exercise covered each stage of a transaction process, from origination to the final investment pitch, using a real-life scenario from the NorthEdge portfolio as a case study. Students were able to hear talks from:

  • James Marshall & Mani Minhas from NorthEdge on an introduction to Private Equity
  • Lucie Mills from NorthEdge on Value Creation & the importance of ESG
  • Tim Day from Rothschild on corporate finance
  • Sam Allen from NorthEdge on starting a career in PE
  • Joel Smith from PwC on the due diligence process

During the final deal pitch, students were asked to present their investment thesis to a mock investment committee. The judges were particularly impressed with the winning team’s consideration of how key risks could be mitigated, the clarity of the answers when engaging with the committee and most impressively, their collaboration as a team.

James Marshall, Director at NorthEdge, led the challenge: “It’s been brilliant to build on the success of previous years by partnering with three investment societies this year. The students have continued to impress with their strategic thinking, attention to detail and continued commitment to the challenge, which is a testament to the talent in each society.

“As one of the few university challenges of its type in the UK, it’s another example of NorthEdge’s commitment to encourage a wider and more diverse set of talent into the Private Equity industry. We look forward to hosting the challenge again next year with Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester Investment Societies, and will be inviting even more leading professionals from the local deal making community to join the programme.”
